![]() ![]() ![]() Or go vegetarian by using nuts and legumes as the base, like in this recipe for meatless meatballs. ![]() Steamed, grilled, or sautéed shrimp is another delicious choice to top off your noodles.Įven meatballs can be a healthy pasta topper when made with lean ground chicken or turkey. Skinless chicken (grilled, baked, or sautéed) instantly turns pasta into a filling main course. Now that you've got pasta and fresh vegetables covered, it's time to add lean protein. You can lightly sauté or steam vegetables that have been cut into chunks or strips, and then toss them in after you cook pasta or add them to homemade sauce. Start with a healthy base of whole-grain pasta, and then pile on veggies like spinach, onions, peppers, squash, zucchini, eggplant, peas, mushrooms, and broccoli. You can enjoy flour-based pasta while keeping calories in check (and packing in nutrition) by using vegetables to increase the volume of your meal. Just can't give up your pasta noodles? That's okay. Zucchini, carrots, parsnips, and butternut squash all work well in pasta dishes. Using a spiralizer or veggie peeler, cut vegetables into "noodles," sauté for a few minutes, and top with the sauce of your choice. One way to enjoy a larger helping of your favorite pasta dishes - without the calorie overload - is to swap flour-based pasta for veggie noodles. A big, hearty bowl can add up to hundreds of calories, so be sure to determine the right portion size for your daily calorie allotment, and serve accordingly. Uncooked pasta has about 100 calories per ounce this equals about ½ cup when cooked. And remember that even though whole-grain pasta is healthier, you still need to watch your portion sizes. Because of this, whole-grain pasta is digested more slowly, which helps to maintain a steady level of glucose in the blood and keeps you feeling fuller longer.Īlways check the ingredients list when you're buying pasta, and look for whole-wheat flour listed as the first ingredient. Whole-wheat or whole-grain pasta includes the nutritious layers of the grain that add heart-healthy fiber to your dish (these grains have been removed from regular white pasta). Pasta is naturally low in fat and high in carbohydrates. The one key factor to remember is that you should choose pasta made from whole grains. Let's start with the basics: the pasta itself. The key is to choose the most wholesome ingredients - and employing a few of the following tricks can help you lower calories and fat without losing any of the flavor! 1. The good news is that if you're following a healthy diet to begin with, then spaghetti and meatballs, penne primavera, and even lasagna can all be healthy options to add to your dinner rotation. And while the 23,000 study participants who ate pasta regularly were more likely to have a healthy body weight, they also followed a healthy Mediterranean diet. But you don't have to ban pasta entirely or even relegate it to "cheat meal" status in fact, an Italian study published in July 2016 in Nutrition & Diabetes has found that eating pasta is associated with a reduced likelihood of obesity.īut before you start piling on the pasta, remember that the portions Italians eat are much smaller than what's seen on a dinner plate in the United States. Whether you're trying to lose weight or just eat healthfully, pasta tends to be seen as off-limits. ![]() ![]() ![]() #31 Every year on this day, we celebrate the daughter who has made us the world’s luckiest parents. #30 A daughter is someone who comes along and teaches you what happiness truly is. Since then, a paper crane and the name of Sadako Sasaki became an international symbol of peace, while the city of Hiroshima hosts a statue of the girl releasing a paper crane into the world. She died after having made 644 cranes, but her classmates finished her legacy and buried Sadako with a wreath of 1,000 cranes to honor her. ![]() ![]() Having seen other children passing from the same disease, she understood her end is approaching and instead of her health – she wished for world peace and that children in the world will no longer suffer. Knowing she was very sick, even though she was only a girl, Sadako hoped to make the cranes to restore her health. Sadako Sasaki was a survivor of the atomic bombing at the age of two, and in 1955 she was suffering from leukemia. The legend says anyone who creates one thousand paper cranes will have their biggest wish come true. One of the most touching origami stories is the one of Sadako, a young girl from Hiroshima. And finally, the types are many – from kinetic origami, to modular, wet-folded, to kirigami – art of paper cutting. A lot of tools is used – bone folders, tweezers, rulers, even glue and scissors. Known origami techniques are usually based on several basic shapes or models, such as valley or mountain, pleat, reverse fold, squash fold, sing, square base, fish base, waterbomb and the frog base. It serves multiple purposes, always bringing the folder a lot of satisfaction. Today origami permeates the area of hobby, design, art and even mathematical calculation. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 94, after having developed a special folding system back in the 1930s, helping global origami standardization. One of the fathers of modern origami was Akira Yoshizawa. While modern origami praises the skill of folding paper without the use of cuts or glue, traditional origami, especially that kind bound to other countries than Japan, does not exclude these aids. A lot of origami models we find today are under somebody’s copyright, but this doesn’t go for the oldest forms, such as the aforementioned crane. While traditional origami was passed down through generations orally, modern origami is generally recorded in books, often developed and reinvented by contemporary designers. Still, Japanese style origami maintained its special form, meaning and charm. When the Moors entered Spain, they brought this skill with them, it spread across the Pyrenean peninsula and then across the whole of Western Europe, becoming common in the 19th century. Paper folding art was not indigenous to Japan alone, but it had appeared in Europe as well. The end of the 19th century was marked with the appearance of the name for this noble art as we know it today, switching from “orikata” to origami. In the mid eighteen-hundreds, Adachi Kazuyuki teamed up with Kaya Ragusa and issues a more elaborate textbook in origami. The first written instructions for making items out of paper date back to the late seventeen-hundreds, tracing to the famous “secret to folding one thousand cranes” book, or Senbazuru Orikata, by Akisato Rito. The progress of paper production made origami widespread and affordable, while skills and forms of paper folding developed, making it a very special form of art. Origami was developing greatly over centuries and when Edo period began with the sixteen hundreds, it has already become a leisure activity, although it kept the ceremonial purpose it originally had. Therefore, origami was intended to be used during religious ceremonies only at first. Handmade and rare, paper was a luxurious commodity, available only to the richest. Having been invented in China at the very beginning of the second century AD, paper entered Japan four centuries later, brought to the country by monks. The name of origami is derived from Japanese terms oru, which means “to fold”, and kami, meaning “paper”. ![]() Therefore, origami flowers bring us back to the bountiful history spreading across the Japanese culture, social system and all islands. But what is it that can make origami so magical, so engaging and so deeply touching? Origami is the art of paper folding similar to napkin folding from Japan. One slightly hidden function in MacVector is that you can select sequences in the “hitlist” and then choose Database->Retrieve to Disk or Database->Retrieve to Desktop to download the matching sequences from the NCBI. Use this to identify and align a test sequence to the databases at the NCBI using the popular BLAST algorithm. Pustell Matrix can be used not only to compare DNA:DNA and Protein:Protein, but you can also use it to compare DNA:Protein where the algorithm will translate the DNA in all 6 frames before aligning to the protein. Finally you can use it to identify repetitive regions which appear as parallel diagonals offset from the main diagonal. Dot Plots are also the best way of identifying sequence rearrangements – the display clearly shows insertions and deletions (the main diagonal will be broken and have an offset) and even inversions (the inverted diagonal will run bottom left to top right and be colored blue). ![]() You can use this to identify shorter regions of similarity, then copy those sections to new sequence windows for more in depth analysis using ClustalW or Align to Reference. To cook, all that needs to be done is heat up a nonstick skillet with a tablespoon of oil on medium-high heat and then stir-fry the zoodles, tossing frequently until al dente. They shouldn't be cooked like regular wheat noodles that are supposed to absorb liquid. I know some folks like to boil their zoodles and that makes me cringe because you are adding water to them instead of removing it. You will find it makes a huge difference in your finished cooked zoodles. Try and let them wick excess moisture out for at least 30 minutes, up to 1 hour if you have the time. ![]() If the paper towels get really wet, I'll change the top layer of paper towels before rolling up. After about 20 minutes, I like to roll them up in the paper towels to help press more moisture out. Within 5 to 10 minutes you will notice the moisture being drawn out of the zoodles by the salt and wicking into the paper towels. I gently press them down with my hands and then walk away. I lightly salt them (about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon for a large batch of zoodles) and then place another layer of paper towels on top. To pull out the excess liquid from the zoodles, I like to spread them out in a single layer on top of a layer of paper towels (placed on top of a dish towel). It just adds flavor and thickens the sauce a bit more.Ībout an hour before starting the sauce, I used my Paderno Spiralizer to make a bunch of zoodles with zucchini and yellow summer squash it only takes a couple minutes to make a big pile of them. I used Del Grosso's Fireworks sauce tonight and added it to browned ground round, diced bell pepper and onion, quartered fresh mushrooms and baby spinach that I browned and cooked before adding the sauce. I usually prefer to eat my pasta in a pasta bowl, but this evening I intentionally ate it on a plate so you could see there was NO wateriness whatsoever. I'm going to share how I keep my zoodles from being watery. But, if your zoodles aren't prepped right, you will still end up with watery pasta when you serve it. If you use one of the acceptable jarred sauces (as in no sugar, or other additives), you can easily conquer that simply by simmering it uncovered for about 20 to 30 minutes until the excess liquid cooks off and the sauce reduces and thickens.
